Climbing to The Apex

Matthew Browne

Featuring the Instagram tagline “nestled in the ‘burbs of Big Bear”, The Apex Cabin is located in Sugarloaf, California. A short drive from the ski slopes and Big Bear Lake, this cozy dwelling has everything you need for a balanced weekend getaway. Originally built in 1963, The Apex Cabin has received a modern facelift while hanging onto its nostalgic beauty. Sitting close to 6,000 ft above sea level, this area speaks to the outdoor adventurer.

Prior to our stay, I had the opportunity to interview the cabin host, Kayla. Inspired by her love for DIY projects, she began searching for a cabin in early 2021. Sharing that a few friends had purchased cabins in the area, Kayla had her eyes set on Big Bear Lake. When she found the unique A-frame that is now known as The Apex Cabin, she sealed the deal.

The name says it all. By definition, apex translates to the top or highest point of something, especially one forming a point. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by The Apex’s alluring A-frame shape. Inside of the cabin, the lofted bedroom faces a beautiful textured glass window that provides an amber hue during every sunrise and throughout the daylight hours. Situated as a focal point, the original wood stove provides both ambiance and heat for the cold winter nights. The inspiration for the cabin renovation is centered around a green velvet couch that is accented by a floral patterned wallpaper. Kayla explained the color palette is drawn from the forest element and the natural surroundings of the cabin. Outdoors, the cabin features a spacious deck that allows guests to sip their morning coffee while listening to the neighborhood birds.

The facelift for this cabin included gutting the kitchen and bathroom, installing new cabinets and countertops, as well as new sinks. Decorative tilework is featured in both the kitchen and bathroom. Kayla expanded upon her DIY knowledge during this portion of the cabin project. Her greatest takeaway and piece of home renovation advice? Use easy, symmetrical shapes when tiling for the first time. Give yourself time to learn the skill and develop a greater understanding of the tiling process. In other words, learn to walk before you attempt to run.

Aside from its original 1960s appeal and tasteful renovations, The Apex Cabin also has a few homey features that you won’t find at many vacation rentals. Feel like taking a step back into your childhood? Be sure to pack your favorite VHS videocassettes. The Apex Cabin comes equipped with a VCR. If your personal collection of videocassettes are collecting dust next to your baseball cards and Beanie Babies, no worries. The cabin is stocked with a nice collection of throwback movies. In addition to videocassettes, guests can also enjoy a record player and a selection of vinyl records.

As I wrapped up the interview, Kayla was kind enough to share a few of her favorite local outdoor attractions and shops including the Alpine Pedal Path Trail, Doves Nest Thrift Store, and Pickle's Pie Shop. Whether you’re looking for recreational opportunities or a cozy cabin weekend in the Big Bear area, The Apex Cabin is the perfect choice.
